Ermones with its small gulf surrounded by high and steep rocks, is one of the most spectacular sceneries of the island. The wilderness of the scenery as well as the mythology, according to which it was on Ermones beach that princess Nausicaa (daughter of Alkinoos) found Odysseus/Ulysses, are the main attractions for visitors. There is in fact a great resemblance between Homer’s description and reality. In addition, another legend is closely related with the beach of Ermones, according to which one of the rocks that surrounds the gulf is a petrified pirate who tried to steal the image of the Holy Virgin. As one of the rocks has the shape of a human body, and as most pirates of those times were Saracenes/Muslims, it still is called “o Tourkos/the Turk”.
