Paleokastritsa is one of
the most celebrated beauty spots on the
island, six small coves with incredibly
clear water nestle in a coastline of hills
and promontories draped in olive, cypress
and lemon trees. Many claim that it was
the site of King Alcinous's fabulous palace
and the rock out to see, called Kolovri,
is said to be the ship that carried Ulysses
home.
Glyfada has a long stretch
of golden sand making it ideal for youngsters.
Watersports of every kind are available,
including sailing and windsurfing.
Pelekas perches at the
top of a winding road and above the village
is the Kaisers Lookout where Kaiser Wilhelm
II frequently went to admire the spectacular
sunsets. There are several tavernas and
cafes plus numerous shops and tourist agencies
and a bus runs regularly to Pelekas beach
from the main square.
Myrtiotissa is described
by some enthusiasts as the most beautiful
beach in Europe. Tree and shrub covered
cliffs drop directly to the sand creating
a wonderful sense of isolation. Rocky promontories
curl at both ends of the long beach offering
opportunities for snorkelling in the crystal
clear water. Beach beds and umbrellas may
be hired and snacks and drinks are also
available on the beach. The "Bella
Vista" half way between the beach and
the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin is an
ideal place for lunch and to enjoy the spectacular
views over the beach. (check out Myrtiotissa.com

Corfu Town. "The
city was Venetian until 1780...nearest the
sea there is the most beautiful esplanade
in the world" Edward Lear 1848. The
main sights of Corfu Town start at the sea's
edge where you can enjoy a panoramic view
from the airy heights of the Old Fortress.
One of the focal points is the Esplanade
where families promenade, marching bands
parade and festive occasions are celebrated
on this broad green expanse separating the
Old Fortress from the rest of the town.
The Ionian Monument on the southern half
of the Esplanade celebrates the island's
union with Greece in 1864 and is surrounded
by marble reliefs displaying the symbols
of the seven Ionian islands. The elegant
arcades of the Liston border the west side
of the Esplanade where there are many cafes
and bars. The Old Town, or Campiello is
a a facinating maze of narrow streets, steep
stairways and arched alleys. |
